Chapter 11

He didn’t want to spoil the moment, but they’d arrived. Squeezing her hand, he pointed up ahead. “I think that’s her. She fits the description. Strawberry blondish hair and skin so pale it appears translucent. Although living at the beach has put more color in her than most of their kind. She’s got a small build but definite muscle. Many would mistake her for a fragile child and yet she’s freed many of her kind. Can you read her? I don’t want her to pick up on our presence too early.”

“Too late. She already has. She knew we were coming.” But who told her? Kate stepped forward in greeting, but Daria spoke first.

“Mystic, it’s good to meet you. And your Guardian, of course. My apartment is just up the hill there. It’s private and has been secured. We will be safe there.” She led the way while they followed silently behind her.

Daria opened the door. He wasn’t surprised by the gasp of shock Kate didn’t manage to contain. Her home was something out of a magazine and extremely tidy. He’d bet you couldn’t find a speck of dust anywhere in here. The furniture had all been hand crafted and had been left a pale natural wood color. Shelves were built-in floor to ceiling filled with rare and antique books and other rare pieces collected over centuries. Expensive paintings occupied any space not taken by the shelves. It was a cross between a museum and a library.

They followed her to a sitting area to the side. Here he could see a little more of her personality. She had pictures of friends or those she’d helped over the years. In the far corner, there was an eleven by seventeen portrait in an ornate picture frame. It contained a picture of Daria and a man with pitch black hair, straight nose, and more of a sneer than a smile. He knew it to be Drake from his father’s memories. He shared a lot of similar features to the Shadow Warriors including golden topaz eyes. He’d have to check into his lineage when he had some extra time. Maybe next century.

She took a seat and motioned them to begin. He’d let Kate take the lead on this one.

Kate sat beside her to keep it more personal. “Thank you for meeting with us, Daria. I know the relationship between Seekers and the Council has been severely damaged. I’m here to try and repair some of that if I can.”

“And to ask us to join in the fight against Braxus?” Kate stayed quiet for a moment as she connected to Daria. He decided to give them space for now.

“Of course, we would love to have you fight with us. The weapons I have seen and the stories I’ve been told make you powerful allies. But I’m mainly here because of some rumors that your city may be under attack.” She could sure pack a punch. Daria inhaled quickly. She knew something that she wasn’t quite ready to share yet.
